Addo Food Group supports homeless charity with virtual trek

Employees at Nottinghamshire-based pastry producer Addo Food Group have been raising money for charity, Canaan Trust, by embarking on a four-week virtual trek challenge.

The ‘525-Miles for Meals’ fundraiser has allowed staff to follow a route between all their sites, currently raising a total of £2,800.

Staff at the Tottle and Riverside Bakeries, have also been supporting the fundraising by hosting a ‘dress down week’ and donating long shelf life food items.

Addo Food Group, which is based in Long Eaton, has been providing secure accommodation and support for the homeless and vulnerable individuals for the last 25 years.

In addition to operating two hostels for homeless men, the trust also supports women and families who may become homeless, either as a result of fleeing domestic abuse or part of the 60% of the hidden homeless – living with family members or friends, in squats or other insecure accommodation.

In parallel to these services the Trust, which operates 24/7 365 days a year, provides a comprehensive food bank service supplying food aid as well as access to toiletries and hygiene packs for anyone in need.

Samantha Hart, group HR director at Addo Food Group said: “Despite these unprecedented times, we are exceptionally proud of the team’s efforts to support the Canaan Trust and help those who are less fortunate.

“Our “Miles for Meals” campaign has already surpassed its target of £2,000 and we plan to continue to support the Trust and its fantastic work.”

Kevin Curtis, project manager at Canaan Trust said: “We would like to thank everyone at Addo Food Group for their selfless support throughout this challenging time – this donation will make a huge difference.

“The people we help have been impacted by the financial and social implications of the crisis. In the last few weeks alone, the Trust has been supporting up to five new cases of homelessness a day, many of which have been a direct impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Throughout the pandemic, our expenditure has also increased far beyond pre-Covid-19 budgets. With all our fundraising events being cancelled and our income heavily relying on sponsorships, we are facing a loss of £30,000-£50,000, depending on how long the crisis continues – therefore it is vital that businesses like Addo Food Group continue to support local organisations like ours.”

Thousands of farmers descended on central London to protest against changes to inheritance tax announced in the budget last month. The farmers argue that the changes will destroy family farms and that the nation's food security is at risk, while the government says that the change will likely affect only around 500 larger estate farms. Tractors descend on Westminster as farmers protest begins

Thousands of British farmers today (19) are set to march to Parliament Square to protest against the end of an inheritance tax exemption that has helped family farms pass down the generations, saying the move will threaten food production.

First unveiled in chancellor Rachel Reeves’s Budget, the plans to impose inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1m have sparked fury among rural communities, who have contested the government’s assertion that small family farms will not be impacted by the changes.

Pricing and Next Generation Products surge boost Imperial Brands revenue and profits

Imperial Brands has reported a robust performance for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024, helped by strong cigarette prices and rise in its Next Generation Products (NGP) segment.

The group, whose brands include Golden Virginia tobacco, Rizla rolling papers, Winston cigarettes and the vaping brand blu, delivered a 4.6 per cent increase in tobacco and NGP net revenue on a constant currency basis. This was driven by strong pricing in the tobacco segment, which offset a 4 per cent decline in volume, and a remarkable 26.4 per cent rise in NGP revenue.
