Alert after ‘opportunist thief’ targets Tunbridge Wells shops

Businesses in Tunbridge Wells have been urged to be on alert after an ‘opportunist thief’ targeted shops in the area.

Detectives have issued CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with two incidents that took place on 23 June.

In both cases, the alleged offender distracted staff to steal cash and a mobile phone.

Sankey’s pub in Mount Ephraim was the first business targeted by the man, who is reported to have engaged staff by asking about pub’s reopening, before requesting a piece of paper to write the details down.

It was later discovered that a phone had been stolen from the premises.

Half an hour later, the suspect has entered a shop in London Road, Southborough, and distracted a worker by asking for a postcode to an address. As he left, cash was found to have been taken.

Kent Police said the suspect had also been seen visiting other premises in the local area.

Anyone with information on the man (pictured in the top) can contact the police by calling 01622 604100, quoting reference 46/10681/20. Alternately, they could contact Kent Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555111, or by using the online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Retail sales take bigger-than-expected hit in October

British retail sales fell by much more than expected in October, according to official data that added to other signs of a loss of momentum in the economy in the run-up to the first budget of prime minister Keir Starmer's new government.
