Community has offered support after a Premier store in Consett was targeted by robbers less than a month after it was taken over by new owner.

Emma and Derek Martin took over Premier Park Road convenience store, in Consett, County Durham, three weeks ago. But the couple were left horrified on Monday (16) after a member of staff at the shop was confronted by an alleged robber armed with a knife.

No one was injured in the incident, which happened soon after the shop opened, but the worker was left shaken. The man was later arrested and presented in court for attempted robbery and possessing an offensive weapon.

Emma told local media outlet, "We literally took the business over three weeks ago. The couple we bought it off had it for 15 years and said nothing like this had ever happened to them. It is horrible, and you think 'why our little shop'.

"But it's brought out the best in everyone. People have been coming in to check on us. Everyone has been offering their support. It shows how important the local shop is to people.

The incident was "scary" for shop assistant wo was present at the store at the time.

"It was a bit scary for her," she said. "At that time of day we get a lot of school children in the shop and there's parents in with their kids on the way to school.

Emma added, "I have got to say the police were unreal. I was impressed."

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said, "Police were called to Premier on Park Road, Consett at 8.30am after reports of a man threatening a member of staff with a knife.

"Nothing was taken from the store however the victim was understandably shaken. A 21-year-old man was arrested nearby in connection with the offence.

"He has since been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and attempt robbery. He appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court this morning where he did not enter any pleas. The man was remanded into custody and will next appear at Durham Crown Court on October 15."
