Baileys secures B Corp certification

Baileys secures B Corp certification
To celebrate the B Corp certification, the Baileys team revealed a living billboard, made from a selection of Irish grasses including clover, moss and white wildflower.

Baileys has on Thursday announced its B Corp certification, a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified social and environmental performance.

The Diageo-owned brand added that it is the largest global spirits brand to join the B Corp movement to date, which includes 5,500 certified businesses.

The certification covers performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.

“We are thrilled to be joining the B Corp movement, a community of brands using business for positive change for people and planet,” Jennifer English, Global Brand Director for Baileys commented.

“We believe treating is an act of caring, not just for ourselves, but for the world around us. As the largest global spirits brand to join the B Corp movement, we are looking forward to working with the B Corp communities across global markets and ensuring that we are using the scale of our business to deliver positive impact.

“While this is an important milestone for Baileys, we know that there is more we can do. We are already looking forward to the delivery of more initiatives as we journey towards our 2030 commitments.”

BAILEYS IS B CORP

In the rigorous certification process across Customers, Governance, Workers, Environment and Community, Baileys said its highest scoring impact areas are Workers and Environment.

Supporting the scores in Workers, all aspects of the employee experience were taken into consideration, including equality and diversity. As of 2022, 75 per cent of the Baileys Leadership team are female, and all Baileys employees have access to leading benefits, like the six months paid annual leave for parents.

Baileys Environment score represents the company’s dedication towards delivering a more positive impact across its supply chain, from grass to glass. This includes reducing the amount of water used across factories and switching to 100% renewable electricity to power them.

The brand added that the certification supports Diageo’s wider 10-year sustainability action plan “Society 2030: Spirit of Progress”.

Ewan Andrew, President, Global Supply Chain & Procurement and Chief Sustainability Officer, Diageo, commented: “We want to create drinks that consumers love, with the brand’s sustainability journey and Diageo’s wider 10-year sustainability action plan in mind. Becoming B Corp certified is great recognition for Baileys and the team that work so hard in producing it, from the dairy farmers through to the delivery drivers and everyone in between.”

Although the UK's overall recycling rate has seen a significant rise, reaching 44 per cent in 2015 compared to just 17 per cent in 2008, progress has plateaued in recent years, with indications that the rate may now be declining.

Safer alternatives to cigarettes could save millions of lives and billions of pounds, says think tank

Promoting safer alternatives to cigarettes could save 19 million years of life by 2030 and reduce smoking-related costs to taxpayers by up to £12.6 billion annually, a new report from the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) has revealed.

The think tank argues that the UK government's current approach to achieving a Smoke Free 2030 - defined as reducing smoking rates to 5 per cent or lower - is both illiberal and unworkable and will significantly set back progress against smoking related harm. The ASI warns that policies such as a generational tobacco ban, a new tax on vapes, and restrictions on heated tobacco products and flavours will hinder harm reduction efforts.
