Berwick-Upon-Tweed store reopens after £120,000 refurbishment

Berwick-Upon-Tweed store reopens after £120,000 refurbishment

A Costcutter store in Berwick-upon-Tweed has reopened late last month following the completion of a £120,000 refit.

Formerly a Spar, the site in Tweedmouth was purchased by local retailer Kash Nijjar in August 2020 with plans to completely overhaul the store to bring it up to date and increase shop floor space.

The refit saw a staircase repositioned and the layout completely transformed to increase the store size by more than 30 per cent to 1,300 sq ft.

The new store features the fascia format and interior finish, developed through Costcutter Supermarket Group’s business growth programme Shopper First: Drive Five to Thrive. Shopper insights pinpointed a mix of ‘Busy Impulsers’ who want healthy and fresh produce for their families and ‘Habitual Browsers’ who look for inspiration on food items as the key types of shoppers.

Using this data to tailor the range and focus of the store, key categories within the store now include an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables, a variety of frozen produce and meal solutions, a wide range of beers, wines and spirits, plus over 500 Co-op Own Brand products.

To complement the offering the store also features a Tango Ice Blast machine and a Fwip machine, in addition to an ATM, Paypoint and Lottery services.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the new store, in fact the transformation couldn’t have been more dramatic,” Nijjar said

“Recognising there was a real need to create a convenience offering that would allow customers to do their ‘full shop’ right on their doorstep, we worked closely with the Costcutter team and they guided us through every stage of the journey, from the structural work to range selection.

“It’s taken a lot of planning and hard work to create the new-look store, but the positive feedback we’ve received so far has made it all worthwhile.”

Debate heats up as community group calls to boycott self-checkouts

While a community group recently criticised self-service checkouts, saying automation lacks the "feel good factor", retailers maintain that rise in the trend is a response to changing consumer behaviour and the need of the hour.

Taking aim at self-checkouts in stores, Bridgwater Senior Citizens' Forum recently stated that such automation is replacing workers and damaging customer service.
