The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has announced the launch of its new insurance service, Bira Insurance, provided by Ascott Insurance.

The trade body said the service partnership aims to offer tailored insurance solutions to Bira members across the retail sector, adding that Ascott Insurance, an independent insurer, aligns with Bira's core value that every business is unique and requires bespoke insurance cover.

The new service offers a wide range of commercial insurance solutions, covering shops, vehicles, flats above shops, and mixed-use properties. Additional coverage options include healthcare, travel, exhibitions, and even livestock.

“We at Bira use Ascott for our own office and vehicle cover and have been very impressed. This is why we are now entering into a partnership with Ascott, to bring their excellent service to all our members,” Andrew Goodacre, Bira chief executive, said.

“Their ability to provide comprehensive coverage under one roof has already resulted in savings for members with multiple policies."

Sharing her experience, Karen Forret of Wilkies Department Stores, a Bira ambassador, said: “Like with any service move, it's always something that can be time-consuming, but the team at Ascott were efficient and professional. It wasn't any more time-consuming than a normal renewal with a continuing insurer. Ascott have already shown that their customer service is excellent; we had an accident in one of our stores and our representative from Ascott went to the store and met with the loss adjuster on our behalf.”

Anne Neill of Walkers of Pottergate, added: “When I contacted Bira for a recommended shop insurance broker, I was immediately directed to Ascott Insurers. I spoke to Jamie, told him my needs and he was on the ball right from the get-go. I was really impressed with his grasp of my needs and the speed and quality of his responses and service. Within 48 hours I was offered a competitive quote, which fully met my needs, and I paid up and it was 'job done'.”

'Walkable high streets boost economy'

Shoppers who walk and wheel spend more than those arriving by car, states a recent report, demonstrating the significant economic and social benefits of investing in walkable town centres, challenging traditional views on urban accessibility.

The findings published in third edition of "The Pedestrian Pound Report", recently published by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, come at a critical juncture for British high streets, with a record number of retail failures in 2022 and a vacancy rate of nearly one in seven by the end of 2023.
