Birds Bakery Doughnut Week sales fundraises £10K for The Children's Trust

Birds Bakery has raised £10,000 for The Children’s Trust, following the success of its own Doughnut Week, after the national event was cancelled in May due to coronavirus.

Held last week (12-19 September) the bakery decided to organise the fundraising event to support the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injuries.

A total of 45,758 doughnuts was sold throughout the 60 stores, with 20p from every doughnut sold was contributed as a donation.

Limited edition strawberry and lemon & lime flavoured doughnuts including exclusive treats were also bought back in honour of the event.

Birds Bakery has been supporting The Children’s Trust for more than 16 years, last year £9,000 was raised by selling around 45,000 doughnuts during the official National Doughnut Week.

Lesley Bird, chief operating officer at Birds Bakery, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised £9,152 for The Children’s Trust, which we topped up with an additional £848 to raise the total amount to a fantastic £10,000.

“The Children’s Trust is a charity that we have supported for a number of years and is incredibly close to our hearts. We really hope it will make a difference to those in need.”

Mr Bird added: “We enjoyed seeing some of our old favourites back in our stores again and we are really grateful to those who have purchased our doughnuts to help us raise thousands of pounds for such a great cause.

“We also donated a number of doughnuts to nearby police, ambulance and fire stations, as our way of saying thank you for all their hard work, particularly in the recent challenging times.”

Harrison Galliven, community fundraising executive at The Children’s Trust, said: “We’re extremely grateful for Birds’ continued support. To keep our vital services running, we need to raise £7 million a year and the covid-19 crisis has hit our fundraising hard.

“The money raised from Doughnut Week will help us to support more children and families across the UK, affected by brain injury.”

'Walkable high streets boost economy'

Shoppers who walk and wheel spend more than those arriving by car, states a recent report, demonstrating the significant economic and social benefits of investing in walkable town centres, challenging traditional views on urban accessibility.

The findings published in third edition of "The Pedestrian Pound Report", recently published by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, come at a critical juncture for British high streets, with a record number of retail failures in 2022 and a vacancy rate of nearly one in seven by the end of 2023.
