A South Yorkshire shop has been slapped with hefty fines and legal costs after breaking food safety laws.

Brothers Convenience Store in High Street, Wombwell, has been handed more than £9,000 in fines after they were found to be selling food without proper labelling.

The infraction, which included missing crucial ingredient and allergen information on the labels, was caught during an inspection by Barnsley Council's Trading Standards team in May last year.

The council officers handed the store an improvement notice, providing an opportunity to rectify the issue. However, subsequent non-compliance led to court action.

At a hearing held recently, Brothers Convenience Ltd faced prosecution under the Food Safety Act 1990. The court handed down a £6,000 fine, imposed legal costs of £1,082.66, and gave a £2,000 victim surcharge.

Barnsley Council says the ruling serves as a stark warning to all food enterprises about the importance of adherence to safety guidelines to safeguard public health.

Councillor Wendy Cain, the cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said, "We're committed to keeping our communities safe and take this responsibility seriously.

"Our teams do great work to make sure businesses comply with the Food Safety Act and keep potentially harmful products off our shelves.

"We work closely with traders to make this possible, helping them to understand their responsibilities and issuing warnings where they can correct errors.

"This successful prosecution shows how we will always put people's health and safety first, taking necessary action when businesses fail to work with us in making improvements."
