CE Co-op set to open new store in Scunthorpe

Councillors will decide whether to give the green light for Scunthorpe’s new Co-op next week.

A local resident has objected to the supermarket, which is set to come to take over a new shop being built on the Kingsway circle with Ashby Road.


North Lincolnshire Council will decide whether to approve the licence application from Central England Co-operative at a meeting on Thursday, November 18.

The Scunthorpe woman who wrote in is worried about the sale of alcohol close to colleges and the university campus.

“These developers are targeting young people 16-21yrs from the two further education colleges and University, who walk near here. Having children (now grown) and having lived in this area for over 40 years, it is easy for young people to acquire alcohol from over 18s,” she said.

No objections to the licence have been received from the authorities, including Humberside Police, Trading Standards, Humberside Fire and Rescue or Environmental Protection.

Co-op says that it will operate a Challenge 25 to policy to prevent underage people from acquiring alcohol and other age-restricted products.

“Signage will be displayed at the area where alcohol/cigarettes/other age restricted goods are located for sale within the premises and also by the till points confirming the ‘Challenge 25’ Policy is in force and advising that it is illegal to purchase products on behalf of underage customers,” the company says.

Electronic records will also be kept of every alcohol sale.

The proposed site off Lloyds Avenue in Scunthorpe used to be the site of the Kingsway House until it was demolished in 2010.

A Starbucks drive-thru and a Cooplands are also planned to be built at the location.

The plans by Almscliffe Dhesi Developments were submitted to North Lincolnshire Council in May and are still under consideration.
