Cereal Partners UK donates two million portions of breakfast cereals to fight child food poverty

Cereal Partners UK donates two million portions of breakfast cereals to fight child food poverty

Cereal Partners UK (CPUK), the maker of Nestlé breakfast cereals, said it will donate two million portions of breakfast cereals to child nutrition charity Magic Breakfast.

The donation will be distributed by Magic Breakfast to provide free breakfasts to thousands of children experiencing morning hunger in disadvantaged areas of the UK.

“Although the issue of child hunger in the UK is sadly not a new one, over the past year in particular it’s become clear that urgent help is needed to support children struggling to get enough to eat,” commented Gharry Eccles, regional vice president at Cereal Partners UK.

“We hope to provide better breakfasts for families struggling during this difficult time, and we are dedicated to doing as much as we can to support Magic Breakfast and its vital mission that no child is too hungry to learn moving forward.”

CPUK is also a signatory of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce set up by England international footballer Marcus Rashford. According to the latest data from the Food Foundation, as many as 2.3 million children last year were living in households that had had experienced food insecurity.

“Our breakfast bowl donation includes Original Shreddies, a classic favourite for children at breakfast time, and nutritionally compliant with school food standards. Shreddies being high in fibre with four layers of whole grain wheat in crunchy malty squares, and sugar below 15g per 100g and 96% whole grain, contributes to a healthy start to the day,” Eccles added.

Magic Breakfast partners with over 1,000 Primary, Secondary and ASL/Special Educational Needs schools, plus Pupil Referral Units. It offers breakfast to around 170,000 children each school day.

Emily Wilkie, head of fundraising at Magic Breakfast, said: “The past year has been especially tough for many families and this donation of two million portions of cereal from Cereal Partners UK helps us continue to provide a healthy breakfast every single school day to thousands of children. A hungry child cannot concentrate on learning so it’s essential that children eat a nutritious breakfast so they don’t miss out on hours of learning each day. Thank you CPUK for this very generous donation.”

Retailers express concern over Welsh government’s decision to press on with its own DRS

A single UK-wide scheme deposit return scheme (DRS) would be far more successful, efficient and effective, retailer body the Federation of Independent Retailers (the Fed) has stated, expressing surprise and some concerns over Welsh government’s decision to press ahead with its own deposit return scheme for bottles and cans and not to join a UK-wide DRS.

The Fed’s National President Mo Razzaq has further warned that this decision by Wales - coupled with its intention to include glass in its scheme - would cause unnecessary confusion. He commented: “While we applaud Wales’s desire to make its deposit return scheme a success, we would prefer to see one single scheme for the UK.

Tractors take to the streets of Westminster as demonstrators attend a farmers rally on November 19, 2024 in London, England. Thousands of farmers descended on central London to protest against changes to inheritance tax announced in the budget last month. The farmers argue that the changes will destroy family farms and that the nation's food security is at risk, while the government says that the change will likely affect only around 500 larger estate farms. Tractors descend on Westminster as farmers protest begins

Thousands of British farmers today (19) are set to march to Parliament Square to protest against the end of an inheritance tax exemption that has helped family farms pass down the generations, saying the move will threaten food production.

First unveiled in chancellor Rachel Reeves’s Budget, the plans to impose inheritance tax on farms worth more than £1m have sparked fury among rural communities, who have contested the government’s assertion that small family farms will not be impacted by the changes.
