Checkout-free store using Amazon technology opens in Milton Keynes

Checkout-free store using Amazon technology opens in Milton Keynes
The Corner Store at Unity Place

A convenience store powered by Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology has opened at Unity Place, Milton Keynes’ much-anticipated landmark visitor destination.

The Corner Store at Unity Place is the first store in Milton Keynes to unveil this service, the latest technological innovation in the area since the starship delivery robots launched in 2018.

Customers to The Corner Store simply use their credit card or mobile wallet at the entry gate. The Just Walk Out technology detects what shoppers take from or return to the shelves, creating a virtual shopping session. When customers complete their shopping, they can leave the store and their chosen payment method will be charged for the items taken.

The Corner Store boasts an extensive retail selection, with something for everyone: hot beverages, nutritious grab-n-go meals, sweet and savoury bakery items, salads, sandwiches, and a wall of fridges stocked with soft drinks and fruit juices. An envious snack range includes fruit, nuts, granola bars, cereal, biscuits, crisps, sweets, and chocolate; plus, essential convenience items from medical supplies and toiletries to reading glasses and umbrellas.

“We are constantly looking at ways to further enhance our customer journey and through the launch of The Corner Store, we can now provide a faster and more seamless experience using proven, secure technology,” Kenneth Leamy, head of digital and technology at Restaurant Associates, said.

“The launch of The Corner Store is a huge milestone for Unity Place and for Milton Keynes, and we are thrilled to offer this technology to improve shopping for our customers”.

Despite the frictionless technology used at The Corner Store, Unity Place has created At least 159 new jobs throughout the building for those in the local Milton Keynes community since its initial launch earlier this year. Located directly opposite MK Station Square, the multi-purpose venue is now fully open, and an Urban Food Market comprising multiple street food vendors, cafés, the rooftop terrace bar Unity Sky Lounge, and the newly launched celebrity chef destination Dipna Anand’s Kitchen and Bar.

Debate heats up as community group calls to boycott self-checkouts

While a community group recently criticised self-service checkouts, saying automation lacks the "feel good factor", retailers maintain that rise in the trend is a response to changing consumer behaviour and the need of the hour.
