North Lanarkshire Council will look into the possibility of creating a recycling scheme for vapes, which could lead to establishing specific drop off points at various facilities including one stop shops, libraries and leisure centres.
Councillors unanimously agreed to a composite motion from the SNP’s councillor Fiona Fotheringham (Wishaw) and Labour councillor Helen Loughran (Thorniewood).
In addition to investigating the feasibility of vape recycling services at council buildings, the revised motion also called for a multi-pronged approach consumer awareness campaign promoting safe disposal of vaping products, while also emphasising various other options provided by others such as retailers.
A report will be presented to a future meeting of the council’s Environment & Climate Change Committee.
Earlier this year councillors also voted in support of proposed legislation to ban disposable vapes which cannot be recharged or refilled.
