Darlington retailer scoops £10k in National Lottery Quarterly Prize Draw

11 National Lottery retailers take home £20,000 between them

Darlington-based National Lottery retailer, Linda Stoddart – owner of Linda’s News – has won an incredible £10,000 in The National Lottery's Site, Stock, Sell online quarterly prize draw. A further 10 retailers each won £1,000 after they were all entered into the draw thanks to maintaining high in-store standards for the sale of National Lottery products.

“I couldn’t believe it when my sales rep told me I’d won £10,000," said Linda. "I’ve never won anything like that in my life! I’ve had the lottery since 2008 when I first took over the shop, and also play myself occasionally. I once won £294 after matching four main numbers in a Lotto ‘Must Be Won’ rolldown, but nothing close to £10,000.

“We’ll be able to use the money to buy a new boiler as the current one needs replacing and I’ll also landscape my garden. This money will make a massive difference to our lives. And to think, it’s all thanks to doing things like always siting the latest National Lottery POS straight away.”

The 10 National Lottery retailers to win £1,000 are:

  • Gowribala Saravanamuth of Nisa Local in Coulsdon
  • Mohammad Zahid of Eyemouth General Store in Eyemouth
  • Mohammad Akhtar of Swinton Convenience Store in Swinton
  • Prajay Patel of Newstime in Brentwood
  • Pulkit Jashbhai Patel of Sarswati News and Off Licence in London
  • A National Lottery retailer in Strood*
  • A National Lottery retailer in Bicester*
  • A National Lottery retailer in Ilkeston*
  • A National Lottery retailer in Manchester*
  • A National Lottery retailer in Stroud*

Pulkit commented: “I’m going on holiday in a few days so this £1,000 has come at a fantastic time. I find the National Lottery rewards programme great in general. It’s a fantastic way to make money and keep up to date with any changes I need to be aware of as a National Lottery retailer.”

“Congratulations to this quarter’s winners," said Allwyn’s Director of Channel Operations, Alex Green. "They are more than deserving of their prizes, as keeping high in-store standards not only helps increase their own shop’s sales but also contributes to the more than £4 million raised every day by players and retailers alike for National Lottery-funded projects.

Retail sales take bigger-than-expected hit in October

British retail sales fell by much more than expected in October, according to official data that added to other signs of a loss of momentum in the economy in the run-up to the first budget of prime minister Keir Starmer's new government.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said sales volumes have fallen by 0.7 per cent in October. A Reuters poll of economists had forecast a monthly fall of 0.3 per cent in sales volumes from September.

Freight crime cost over £680 million

Freight-related crime cost the UK economy an estimated £680-700 million in 2023, when accounting for lost revenues, VAT, and insurance costs, revealed a recent report from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Freight and Logistics.

The study, funded by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), documented 5,370 reported incidents of HGV and cargo crime across the UK last year, a 5 per cent increase on the previous year. Experts suggest that the actual figures could be significantly higher due to under-reporting. The direct value of stolen goods reached £68.3 million.
