Leading One Stop retailers are excited over reports that One Stop stores will soon be able to stock Tesco's core own brand range as the symbol group is set to phase out its current own-label range.

According to recent reports, Tesco’s One Stop convenience subsidiary has announced that from October, it will phase out its current own-label products and replace them with its parent’s "Core Own Brand" range across its estate of 1,000+ stores.

Owner of One Stop Mount Nod store in Coventry, retailer Aman Uppal confirmed the reports, saying that the announcement was made at One Stop franchise meet on Thursday (3).

Uppal told Asian Trader, "I am very happy and super-excited over this news. I have been a part of One Stop for the past eight years and have been waiting for something like this for a long time.

"Tesco Core Own Brand range carries trust and familiarity. People are going to love it that the range is now available at their nearby One Stop convenience stores.

"I feel it's a win-win arrangement for all of us. Though I also understand that the roll-out and logistic will be a bit challenging and might come with some conditions."

With a slump in sales and margins being squeezed, this move is being welcomed by several One Stop retailers as stocking Tesco products is expected to give them a competitive edge, potentially increasing footfall as well as basket size.

Retailer Priyesh Vekaria, in a conversation with Asian Trader, expressed excitement over the reports though he is yet to receive any formal notification or information from the symbol group.

On being asked how he feels about the move, Vekaria said, "It will be fantastic for us and give us huge leverage. Tesco, after all is UK's leading supermarket, and the brand name tends to go a long way. I am very excited."

Vekaria owns and runs One Stop Carlton Convenience in Manchester.

"If we are able to stock Tesco own label range, it will be epic. The store will gain huge footfall of shoppers who are used to shop in Tesco supermarkets and the specific range," he told Asian Trader.

Going by the reports, the Tesco Core Own Brand products will be introduced in phases, starting in the next month and might be rolling into next year. The offer will also include an expanded range of healthier and affordable options.

Reports quoted Stephanie Wood, Managing Director at One Stop, as saying, “This is an incredibly exciting time for us. The Tesco Core Own Brand range will not only elevate the customer experience with high-quality, trusted products, but it will also enable our franchisees to offer a broader and more competitive range to their local communities.”

Tesco’s Core Own Brand range reportedly will also be available on all four of One Stop’s delivery platform partners – Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats and Snappy Shopper.

Chewing gum may release microplastics, early study warns

Chewing gum releases hundreds of tiny plastic pieces straight into people's mouths, researchers said on Tuesday, also warning of the pollution created by the rubber-based sweet.

The small study comes as researchers have increasingly been finding small shards of plastic called microplastics throughout the world, from the tops of mountains to the bottom of the ocean - and even in the air we breathe.
