The GMB union has demanded the recall of the owners of Asda and Stonegate to answer further questions, following the appearance of Gary Lindsay, boss of TDR Capital, before parliament’s Business and Trade Select Committee on 9 January.

The potential collapse of Stonegate pubs raises huge questions over the future of Asda supermarket, GMB has warned MPs.

The pub chain, owned by TDR Capital, had been forced to issue a profit warning as it struggles to refinance its debts.

The Cayman Islands-registered private equity firm – which also owns Asda – previously told a parliamentary committee it was “very confident they would be able to refinance the debt” of some £2.6 billion.

Yet as of September 2023 – months before the committee hearing – Stonegate's accounts showed there was “material uncertainty” over the refinancing plans.

In a letter to Liam Byrne MP, Chair of the Business and Trade Committee, GMB opined that TDR was not up front in answers to Parliament and asked him to recall TDR to be further questioned by the committee.

Stonegate’s collapse would put 4,400 pubs and thousands of jobs at risk as well as raising serious concerns for the future of Asda, employer of more than 150,000 people.

“TDR bosses have serious questions to answer: why was the committee told there was high confidence of refinancing Stonegate’s debts, when the accounts reference 'material uncertainty'?” asked Nadine Houghton, GMB National Officer.

“Why did the founding partner of TDR Capital resign from the Stonegate board on 1 December? How will they ensure Asda doesn’t face a similar fate to Stonegate? Under TDR Capital, Stonegate has been driven into the ground.

“Now they’re doing the same at Asda: slashing millions of staff hours from the shop floor, allowing standards to decline in store and losing market share.

“TDR Capital’s private equity business model is to heap debt on companies, then leave communities and workers to pick up the pieces when things go wrong.”

“The collapse of Stonegate may be a dire warning of what’s to come for Asda.”

Retailers are right to warn of potential job cuts as a result of tax increases announced at last month’s budget, Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has said.

Bailey appeared before the cross-party Treasury select committee on Tuesday (19), after almost 80 retailers claimed rising costs would make “job losses inevitable, and higher prices a certainty”.

High Street Rental Auctions: Independent retailers urged to engage with local councils

The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has urged independent shop owners to reach out to their local councils about the government's newly announced High Street Rental Auction (HSRA) powers, which aim to tackle persistently vacant commercial properties on UK high streets.

Introduced through the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act 2023, the HSRA legislation will come into force on 2 December. It will give local authorities the ability to put the leases of long-term empty shops up for public auction, allowing businesses and community groups to secure short-term tenancies.
