Channel Islands convenience store chain Alliance Supermarkets has teamed up with Henderson Technology to roll out the EDGEPoS EPOS system across its entire estate on Jersey and Guernsey.

The installation of the EDGEPoS platform, which was completed in only five weeks, will give Alliance full control of its five stores from one central location, helping to simplify processes such as ordering and stock control.

Alliance is an independent and locally owned supermarket with four stores in Jersey and one in Guernsey.

The stores stock a wide selection of well-known local and international products including fresh produce, meat, chilled and frozen items to beers, wines and spirits and household products. The chain regularly introduces new products that include organic, plant based and vegetarian options.

The small close-knit team takes pride in offering excellent customer service to both islanders and holidaymakers and the addition of EDGEPoS to the store estate brings a number of technological and sustainability benefits to shoppers, including self-checkouts and the introduction of electronic shelf edge labels in Guernsey.

“We needed to upgrade our systems and when we were introduced to Henderson Technology, we knew we made the right decision,” said Ross Falla, financial director of Alliance.

“As well as the system being ideal for our needs, we have the comfort of knowing its origins are based in the convenience market, built by independent and company-owned retail outlets for use in their own network.

“The project team ensured the smooth planning and transition as we rolled out the system to all five stores. We look forward to using the system’s full capabilities and working with Henderson Technology for the duration of our agreement and beyond.”

Darren Nickels, retail operations director at Henderson Technology, added: “After a competitive tender process, we are delighted to have been selected by Alliance to roll out EDGEPoS across their five Nisa-supplied stores.

“Their experienced team were looking for a progressive, future-proof, c-store EPOS system that could integrate their supplier and operations database with their EPOS platform, while at the same time cope with the demands of their busy stores, and we were delighted to be able to fulfil all those requirements.”

Multiple retailers have calculated specific impacts on their businesses, with costs ranging from £90,000 to £150,000 per year.

"This budget was horrendous for us as a company. Estimated costs to be around £110,000 - £120,000 per year," said Andrew Massey of Masseys DIY in Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

Vape industry concerned over chancellor’s vaping duty proposal

Vape industry bodies have raised concerns over chancellor Rachel Reeves’ budget announcement introducing a flat-rate excise duty on vaping products, saying it could hurt public health and increase financial pressures on consumers.

The new excise tax, set to begin on October 1, 2026, will add £2.20 per 10ml of vaping liquid, with additional VAT. This rate replaces the previous government’s proposed tiered tax structure, which many in the industry had criticised.
