Hull gets new Nisa Local store
Nisa Local, Elmbridge Parade, Hull

Local residents have warmly welcomed a brand-new Nisa Local convenience store opened in Hull.

The store, located on Elmbridge Parade, previously housed a Heron Foods but had been vacant for 12 months.

Spanning 1,500 square feet, the store features Nisa’s modern Evolution grey fascia, offering a sleek and contemporary shopping experience. Inside, customers are greeted by a fresh, modern look, enhanced by Evolution imagery and state-of-the-art lighting.

One of the standout features of the new store is its energy-saving door chillers, which line much of the inner wall space. These chillers boast an impressive array of chilled products, as well as alcohol and sandwiches, catering to a variety of customer needs.

To further enhance the shopping experience, the store has introduced a Smokin’ Bean coffee machine, with plans to install Rollover hotdogs in the coming weeks. An iced drinks machine is also set to be operational in time for the summer months, adding to the store’s robust food-to-go offerings.

Sarinder Mehat, a seasoned convenience retail operator with 20 years of experience and four other stores in Hull, said the initial response to the store from the local community has been really pleasing.

“It has been a good start for the store, and we are happy with the opening weeks of trading,” Mehat said. “We’ve got 5 stores now, including three with Nisa, and we really like Nisa so in future when opening stores we will look to partner with Nisa.”

The store’s commitment to providing value is evident through its extensive range of everyday essentials and regular promotions. Customers can find bargains on a wide selection of items, including chilled, fresh, and ambient products. Promotions extend to beers, wines, spirits, and vapes, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

“These days our customers are very price conscious, so we have lots of promotions across the store to bring that value to our customers. We felt that Nisa offers that quality Co-op brand but also the capability to offer strong promotions to customers,” Mehat said.

“The Nisa team have done a very good job and I’m thankful to Graeme and others for helping us to get off the ground. We know we’re in a competitive area but being with Nisa allows us to offer something a little bit different too with local partners and a stronger food to go range.

“Nisa and MADL also allow us the opportunity to work with the local community and that is something I will be bringing to this store’s community also.”

Although the UK's overall recycling rate has seen a significant rise, reaching 44 per cent in 2015 compared to just 17 per cent in 2008, progress has plateaued in recent years, with indications that the rate may now be declining.

Safer alternatives to cigarettes could save millions of lives and billions of pounds, says think tank

Promoting safer alternatives to cigarettes could save 19 million years of life by 2030 and reduce smoking-related costs to taxpayers by up to £12.6 billion annually, a new report from the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) has revealed.

The think tank argues that the UK government's current approach to achieving a Smoke Free 2030 - defined as reducing smoking rates to 5 per cent or lower - is both illiberal and unworkable and will significantly set back progress against smoking related harm. The ASI warns that policies such as a generational tobacco ban, a new tax on vapes, and restrictions on heated tobacco products and flavours will hinder harm reduction efforts.
