A council hopes to bring back life to its high streets by playing some music to shoppers through outdoor speakers.

Huntingdon Town Council announced last week that it is launching a new system under which important events and dates across the calendar year will be marked with some music. Events like the forthcoming "Sunset Beats and Bites" evenings during the summer months, the annual Halloween Trail, Armistice Services and Christmas time during December.

Karl Brockett, Mayor of Huntingdon said “I am delighted that this system has been installed in our town centre to support the local economy, promoting an improved shopping and visiting experience. The event on 6th July is set to be a fantastic day and we look forward to continuing our partnership with the BID team to boost the ambience and inclusivity along our High Street throughout the year.”

In addition to being used for atmosphere and promotion, the system can also support key safety messaging in the town centre. The speakers can act as a tool to communicate with the public, should there be a situation that requires it.

The speakers have been purchased via grant funding as a joint project between BID Huntingdon First and Huntingdon Town Council through the UK Shared Prosperity (Vibrant Communities) Fund.

Paul Sweeney, BID Town Centre Manager said “BID Huntingdon First are extremely proud of this new and engaging addition to our High Street, working with Huntingdon Town Council to deliver the project that will enhance the town centre at key points of the year.

"The atmosphere that music can provide is invaluable and will make things like Christmas shopping a much more wholesome experience! We can’t wait to test drive the speakers on our very own ‘Once Upon a Time in Huntingdon’ Family Fun Day with music broadcast around the town to captivate and entertain our visitors!”
