The Federation of Independent Retailers (NFRN) has expressed deep dismay at the news that a bill to protect shop owners and their staff from violent assaults has stalled.
The Assaults on Retail Workers (Offences) Bill from MP Alex Norris was due to get its second reading in the House of Commons yesterday (Monday, 28th September) but has now been delayed until Friday, 30th October.
NFRN National President Stuart Reddish said: “The impact of retail crime can be devastating and long-lasting which is why independent retailers need the government to act to protect them in their stores.
"We are bitterly disappointed that this bill has been delayed and want assurances that tackling retail crime will remain a priority for the government.”
The Bill proposes to make certain violent offences, including malicious wounding, grievous or actual bodily harm and common assault, aggravated when perpetrated against a retail worker in the course of their employment.
