James Hall & Co partners with Too Good To Go to expand waste reduction across all SPAR stores

James Hall & Co. Ltd has expanded its successful partnership with Too Good To Go to reduce food waste across all of its company owned SPAR stores.

All SPAR stores from Liverpool to Leeds and Newcastle to Northwich under the name of G&E Murgatroyd will participate in the initiative.

Through the partnership, users of the Too Good To Go app are able to get ‘magic bags’ of miscellaneous surplus stock, close to the end of its shelf life, but still within its best before date at a fraction of the full retail value.

James Hall & Co. Ltd, SPAR’s primary wholesaler for the north of England, began trialing the Too Good To Go app in September last year, initially in a limited number of 10 company owned stores in Lancashire and Merseyside, before rolling it out wider to 45 stores.

In the last 12 months, the app has helped save 22,393 meals and an equivalent 55 tonnes of CO2. There have been 280,000 views of the app, and the service has been used by more than 10,000 customers who have been able to access food worth £10 for an average value of £3.09.

The expansion now means customers using the Too Good To Go app can access the service at all 150 company owned stores in Cheshire, County Durham, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, and Yorkshire.

Fiona Drummond, Company Stores Director at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to expand access to our Too Good To Go partnership service across all company owned stores in northern England.

“Since we launched the partnership service 12 months ago, it has brought multiple benefits to our business, including reducing costs and saving a huge amount of waste food.

“Not only that, it has enabled us to better connect with the communities we serve across northern England who know they can access a healthy, wholesome meal at a reduced price at a G&E Murgatroyd SPAR close to them should they need to.

“This successful expansion is the result of dedicated work from our CSR team, and I would like to thank them for their hard work in driving this initiative forward.”

Vape body decries lack of representation at Tobacco and Vapes Bill hearings

The UK Vaping Industry Association said they are ‘disappointed’ that no representatives for the sector, nor for the millions of adults who have quit smoking through vaping, were invited to speak at the committee hearings for the Tobacco and Vapes Bill held yesterday (7 January).

The bill is currently at the committee stage in the House of Commons. Witnesses who provided evidence in the morning session included chief medical officers for the four nations and chief executive of heath charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) and regional chief executives from ASH in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, along with the representatives from Cancer Research UK and Asthma and Lung UK.

Vapes generate four times the profit of tobacco for c-stores: study

Small convenience stores are selling less tobacco, and the tobacco products they do sell are much less profitable to them than vaping products, according to new analysis from the University of Edinburgh.

Profit margins from vapes were far higher than those of tobacco products, with an average of 37.1 per cent for vape products compared to 8.5 per cent for tobacco products in September 2022. For comparison, profit margins were, on average, 21.0 per cent across all product types.

Footfall from tobacco sales has decreased by nearly 40 per cent in small retail outlets compared to less than a decade ago. In 2015, when Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) conducted a similar analysis, 21 per cent of transactions included tobacco, in 2022 University of Edinburgh researchers found 12.8 per cent included tobacco.
