JW Filshill, United Wholesale Grocers among top 100 companies in Scotland

Scottish wholesale giant JW Filshill and United Wholesale Grocers have been included in the Scotland Limited Report 2024, a ranking of the Top 100 private limited companies in Scotland. The report, compiled by Grant Thornton UK LLP, showcases the best of Scottish business and highlights the resilience, innovation and diversity of the private sector.

JW Filshill is known for conducting retail, wholesale, and cash and carry operations in the Scotland and the North of England.

The wholesaler released a statement on social media, "We are honoured to be part of this elite group of companies that contribute and play a crucial role in the Scottish economy. We are proud of our heritage, our values and our vision for the future and look forward to continuing our journey of growth and excellence.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our colleagues for their continued hard work, and to our suppliers and customers for their support. Without you, this achievement would not have been possible. Thank you for being part of our success story."


In 2024 Grant Thornton UK LLP report, food and drink companies dominate the list (17), with the majority based in the West – the region that is home to over half (51) of the Top 100 companies. The report has also seen a record 27 new entrants in total this year, which may be a combination of businesses bouncing back from a difficult trading period and natural progression up the ranks as a result of ongoing success.

Browns Food Group is also mentioned in the list along with BrewDog.

Britvic, the soft drinks manufacturer set to be acquired by Carlsberg, has posted robust annual results after investment in marketing and product innovation helped it maintain demand for its brands.

Over the year to Sept 30, the company’s pre-tax profits climbed 10.5 per cent to £173.2 million despite a £21.3m hit related to the proposed Carlsberg deal. Britvic stated that its growth was driven by both volume and price-mix, with strong demand for brands such as Pepsi, Tango, Lipton, MiWadi and Ballygowan.

Home secretary pledges to restore neighbourhood policing

Home secretary Yvette Cooper has announced plans to rebuild neighbourhood policing and combat surging shop theft as part of an ambitious programme of reform to policing.
