Nearly a third (29%) of Brits revealed they will be going vegetarian this festive season, according to an online poll carried out by Product of the Year this month.

Others said they’ll be opting for meat (47%), fish (13%) and vegan (5%) options.

Christmas lunch has traditionally been a meaty affair with Turkey, gammon, pigs in blankets and sausage rolls all commonplace. But more and more of us are cutting down on our meat consumption and it’s easier than ever with plentiful options in stores.

In a bid to uncover the nation’s least favourite parts of the day, Product of the Year released a second poll asking people ‘What is the worst part about Christmas lunch?’. And the results did not disappoint: bread sauce drew the most haters with 40 per cent of the votes, sprouts came in second with 24 per cent, too much time spent with sitting around the table with family received 20 per cent and mince pies picked up 16 per cent.

“Product innovation is cheering up Christmas time for all – no matter your dietary requirement or budget,” Helga Slater, managing director at Product of the Year, commented:

“It’s very exciting to see new takes on old classics and total reinventions of what Christmas dinner could/should be. All helping to make it a time of celebration and joy.”
