The first Co-op franchise store in Staffordshire has been launched on the campus of Keele University, reports said on Friday (3).

The new store is a Co-op franchise-operated and run by Keele student union and will serve the campus and local community throughout the year. The store is 27 per cent larger than the previous on-campus store, featuring 12 self-service checkouts, a bakery/hot food section and has created 25 new jobs, Keele University said.

The store will stock a tailored range of great value and quality Co-op own-brand products, with a wide range of Fairtrade, free-from and vegan options. Students will get a 10 per cent discount at the Co-op through a National Union of Students (NUS) scheme.

Martin Rogers, head of new channels at Co-op, said: “Our university franchise stores are a great opportunity for us to grow our brand, share our values, and get our products into the hands of the next generation of customers and members and as the exclusive retail grocery store franchise partner for the NUS we’re already serving around 150,000 students up and down the country.

“We’re delighted to add Keele to our ever-growing portfolio and to welcome these students and community.”

British households deliver 'record-breaking' Christmas sales despite grocery inflation

Christmas 2024 marked a milestone for British households, delivering record-breaking take-home sales of £13.8 billion, an increase of £0.5 billion or 3.4 per cent compared to the previous year over the four weeks to 29 December 2024, Kantar reported on Monday (27).

However, while spending grew, the volume of goods purchased remained flat, reflecting the ongoing impact of inflation on consumer behaviour.

Grocery inflation, though lower than in previous festive seasons, remained a significant factor and was at 3.7 per cent last December.
