New research by Olbas reveals power of nasal breathing

Decongestant and family-favourite, Olbas, has revealed the power of nasal breathing and the important role it plays in reducing congestion. The new research (“Mouth Breathing” survey, conducted in September 2023 with OnePoll) launches as Brits across the country continue to feel the effects of cold and flu and provides an important reminder for those who are suffering with stuffiness to persist with nasal breathing.

The research, conducted with 2,000 British adults, revealed breathing through your mouth could mean you’re twice as likely to experience regular nasal congestion.

Typically, 13 per cent of people breathe through their mouths, and this increases to 18 per cent when asleep; but of these, nearly one in three (31 per cent) admitted they experience nasal congestion often. In comparison, just 15 per cent of those who breathe through their noses feel bunged up regularl1. It also emerged that as a result of these regular stuffy noses, 38 per cent are being kept awake at nigh1.

“Breathing through your mouth can cause several health issues compared to when you breathe more healthily through your nose,” said leading GP and Olbas expert, Dr Roger Henderson.

“Mouth breathing can cause less oxygen to be delivered to the body and one of the problems this can cause is disturbed sleep and increased daytime fatigue and tiredness. It also causes the mouth to dry out, which in turn increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.”

The research also found, of those who experience regular nasal congestion, nearly two in three (64 per cent) are getting blocked noses, while one in three are getting runny noses, and 31 per cent are even having sinus pressure and pain.

When looking for remedies, nasal sprays, steam inhalation and decongestants are the most popular solutions people are turning to as they attempt to relieve their congestion1.

Olbas Brand Manager, Claire Campbell, added: “It is really important that people understand the benefits that come with breathing through their nose, especially when it comes to beating congestion. Rates of common illnesses, that have congestion as a symptom, continue to rise as we make our way through the winter months, so making sure you have clear airways is really important. Olbas has been a trusted staple in cabinets all over the country for a long time, and is now available in a variety of formats.”

For generations, Olbas has been providing a range of winter remedies that are suitable for the whole family to combat the symptoms of the cold and flu, helping you to breathe with ease. The Olbas range includes Olbas Oil, Olbas for Children, Olbas Inhaler Stick, Olbas Nasal Spray, Olbas Menthol Pastilles, Olbas Bath and new for 2023, Olbas Breathe Easy Patches, ensuring there is an Olbas product suitable for the needs of all the family.
