Oat milk is the most searched dairy alternative in the UK, says a new research, adding that when it comes to Europe, coconut milk tops the charts.

As per a new new analysis of Google search data by professional kitchen suppliers Maxima Kitchen Equipment, the most searched dairy alternative in the UK is oat milk with 28,000 Google queries each month. Almond milk is the second most popular on 22,000 searches, and coconut milk attracts the third highest levels of interest with 21,000 Google searches.

Coconut milk is Europe’s most popular alternative to cow’s milk, says the new research, adding that there are 145,000 average monthly searches for coconut milk across the most populated European countries included in the study.

Coconut milk topped the Google searches in major European countries including France, The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Poland and Sweden.

With only 1,000 fewer searches overall, almond milk comes in at second with 144,000 average monthly searches, topping the list as the most searched vegan milk in countries including Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary.

The third most popular vegan milk in Europe is rice milk with 130,000 Google searches, while oat milk is fourth with just over 100,000 searches per month.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Maxima, which conducted the research, said: “November is World Vegan Month and now there is so much more variety in vegan foods and drinks, it is fascinating to see which vegan milk alternatives are the most popular among Europeans. The total European market value of dairy alternatives was estimated at 1.9 billion Euros in 2020 and with climate change being so closely associated with diet choices, it will be interesting to see if more people begin to choose vegan diets and therefore opt for different milk alternatives in the future”.

The analysis was conducted by Maxima Kitchen Equipment which has more than 40 years of experience in the supply and maintenance of professional kitchen equipment.

Consumers value ethics though 'sustainability needs to be competitively priced'

Consumers now want a greater commitment from retailers in cutting food waste, refilling stations, sustainable packaging, and partnering with social purpose organisations, states a recent research, which also highlights that a good majority (69 per cent) of younger consumers are more likely to shop with what they see as socially responsible retailers though price sensitivity still plays a crucial role.

According to the findings, published in Vypr’s Consumer Horizon Report, reducing food waste is the most important factor for the majority of UK consumers (29 per cent), especially for Gen Z women aged 18-24 (38 per cent). More than a third (37 per cent) of men aged 18-24 said they needed food storage advice. A similar number of women aged 18-24 (33 per cent) want meal kits with the exact amount of ingredients included for them to cut down on food waste.
