Poundland to expand convenience store network

Variety store chain Poundland is set to open two more of its Local stores as it extends the pilot scheme to tap into the convenience channel, stated reports on Thursday (16).

The next Poundland Local store will be opened in London at the Junction Centre, St John’s Hill, Clapham Junction on July 2. The store will be its first at a high-traffic transport hub and will be designed so customers can check out quickly.


The London store will be followed this summer by the first Poundland Local store in the West Midlands, in Sutton Coldfield.

The new stores offer items from Poundland’s core range, including groceries, snacks, household products, health and beauty and batteries. Customers will also find items they would expect in a convenience store, including fresh produce, chilled and frozen food, breakfast goods, childcare products like nappies and formula milk, beers, wines and spirits, reports said.

“Each of the new stores will have a range of items tailored to suit the needs of customers in each neighbourhood, whether they live or work locally,” reports quoted Poundland transformation and retail director Austin Cooke as saying.

“In the current economic climate, people are carefully watching how much they spend, and we want them to know that convenience shopping does not have to mean they compromise on value for money.”

The Poundland Local format was unveiled in May 2021, with four convenience stores in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Poundland stated at the time that it was actively looking for other suitable locations, particularly inside the M25.Pi
