SGF mourns passing of Tom Wilson

One of its longest serving elected members and twice President

The SGF has issued a statement that Asian Trader is happy to communicate to its readers:

It is with deep regret that SGF announce the passing of its longest serving elected members, Tom Wilson, who died on Thursday 2nd November 2023, aged 83, in hospital in Stirling.

Tom served in every National Executive Committee, including representing SGF as President twice, and was the Scottish representative on the Committee of Commerce & Distribution in Brussels. Additionally, he served on the Thistle Guild of Spar and later became joint Chairman of the NISA Scotland committee.

Tom ran a family convenience store business, which over the years had shops in Stirling, Edinburgh and Lennoxtown, from 1963 until his retirement in 2017.

He was also Treasurer of Stirling & District Citizens Advice Bureau for many years. In 2009, he was recognised in the Who's Who of Britain's Business Elite for his work with SGF Services Ltd. A Paul Harris Rotarian, he was Past President of Stirling Rotary Club, Past President of Airthrey Castle Curling Club, and had just become an Honorary Lifetime Member of Stirling Golf Club.

Tom is survived by his wife Anne, his son Iain and his partner Louise, along with their four children.

Marking the loss, SGF Chief Executive, Dr Pete Cheema OBE, said: “Tom was resolutely committed to supporting our sector and gave endlessly to both his community and all of the many organisations he worked with.

“I had known Tom for 35 years and we often travelled together to SGF meetings. He was both a retail competitor and a close neighbour. We both had a store in the Raploch, Stirling and we both live in Bridge Of Allan, only a couple of roads apart.

“My wife Kay and I went to visit him just a few short weeks ago and we are all deeply saddened by the loss.

“Tom was a passionate spokesperson for the convenience sector, and he will be sorely missed. Our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to his wife, son and daughter in law, and their family.”

The funeral service will be held at 2pm on Friday 17th November, at Stirling Crematorium.
