SPAR Scotland stores to give free fruit and water to school children

SPAR Scotland stores to give free fruit and water to school children

SPAR Scotland will be giving out free fruit and water to school children at a further six stores as part of its partnership with Healthy Living Programme (HLP).

A Scottish government funded programme administered by the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, HLP aims to increase the range, availability, quality and affordability of fresh produce and healthier products from other categories in convenience stores across Scotland.

Primary school children can pick up free fruit and water on a designated day this month from SPAR stores in Glamis, McAlpine, Ladybank, Stonehouse, Bathgate and Linlithgow. This is the third HLP trial to take place in SPAR stores with the focus on this occasion on a number of different SPAR stores in different locations.

“We are carrying on with our support of the Healthy Living Programme which connects local school children with healthy options available from SPAR convenience stores,” Colin McLean, chief executive of SPAR Scotland, said.

“We continue to measure these trials with a view to extending them further throughout the year. It is important to encourage our youngest customers to embrace healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.”

Gillian Edgar, from the HLP, added: “Healthy Living Programme are delighted to work with SPAR Scotland in a further six stores across Scotland, giving out free fruit to school children who visit the store.

“This is the third leg of the trial and has proved very popular with consumers. Encouraging a healthier snack choice is the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.

“It’s a great way for SPAR Scotland stores to connect with local communities and give something back to local people. It also allows SPAR to showcase the great range of fresh produce in store to younger consumers.”

SPAR Scotland will be giving away apples, pears, bananas and bottles of SPAR Still Water.

Summary
1. One in five people who have successfully quit smoking in England currently vape, with an estimated 2.2 million individuals using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool.
2. The increase in vaping among ex-smokers is largely driven by the use of e-cigarettes in quit attempts, with a rise in vaping uptake among people who had previously quit smoking for many years before taking up vaping.
3. While vaping may be a less harmful option compared to smoking, there are concerns about the potential long-term implications of vaping on relapse risk and nicotine addiction. Further research is needed to assess the impact of vaping on smoking cessation outcomes.
