Two Coventry charities celebrate Summer of Sport with champion donations

Two Coventry charities celebrate Summer of Sport with champion donations
Aman Uppal and Derek Redmond

Two Coventry sports clubs have received a share of £500 from local convenience retailer Aman Uppal, owner of One Stop Mount Nod convenience store, after he won a charity donation of his choice from Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP).

Triumph, an amateur boxing club based at Tile Hill Gym, received £250 from Aman. It was established to encourage more young people to take up boxing and promote high physical and moral standards. The gym has enjoyed great success in recent years, producing boxing champions at different age groups and weight divisions. The money will help Triumph pay for transport to boxing shows and buy club uniforms.

The second recipient is Taekwondo club TST UK, which also received £250. It was set up in 2005 and consists of 12 professional instructors who are passionate about offering high level Taekwondo instruction to all age groups and encouraging people to take up the sport. Aman’s donation will enable TST UK to cover entry fees for their fighters in regional and national competitions.

Both organisations are self-funded and are always looking for support to be able to keep offering their services to local people.

Aman was inspired to donate money to two sports-based causes after attending an event hosted by CCEP and Costa Coffee’s ready-to-drink range, which included a Q&A with ex-Olympian Derek Redmond. With the Olympics and ‘Summer of Sport’ in full swing, Aman was keen to help encourage more people to take up sporting activities.

“It’s a privilege to be able to support two worthy causes in my local area," said Aman Uppal, owner of One Stop Mount Nod convenience store. "Both clubs have been brought to my attention by my wonderful customers in store and it’s brilliant to know I’m helping both local organisations and encouraging more people in the community to get active.

“In the last two years, I’ve been lucky enough to win nearly £2,000 of donations via CCEP. I’ve always ensured that the money goes to local causes, particularly helping those charities that I also volunteer my time with, including Anesis Ministry which helps homeless people in Coventry. I look forward to working with CCEP so that I can continue to support my local community.”

Amy Burgess, Senior External Communications Manager at CCEP said:“At CCEP we have an emphasis on helping communities across the UK, and supporting our independent retail customers, who so often sit at the heart of their communities. Aman is a brilliant example of our customers who goes above and beyond, making a real positive impact in his community.

“It’s brilliant to be able to help make a difference to these two fantastic clubs in Coventry and we will continue to help Aman and other retailers back local causes they are passionate about. I hope we’ll see the Olympics this summer encourage everyone to try a new sport!”

Retailers express concern over Welsh government’s decision to press on with its own DRS

A single UK-wide scheme deposit return scheme (DRS) would be far more successful, efficient and effective, retailer body the Federation of Independent Retailers (the Fed) has stated, expressing surprise and some concerns over Welsh government’s decision to press ahead with its own deposit return scheme for bottles and cans and not to join a UK-wide DRS.

The Fed’s National President Mo Razzaq has further warned that this decision by Wales - coupled with its intention to include glass in its scheme - would cause unnecessary confusion. He commented: “While we applaud Wales’s desire to make its deposit return scheme a success, we would prefer to see one single scheme for the UK.
